"Don't worry about the bits you can't understand. Sit back and allow the words to wash around you, like music."

Off We Go!

Below are two short journal entries from the beginning of the rehearsal process that I’ve decided to put together for the reader’s sake.

09/09 – Accent Work with Marc

Today, we met in DuPont 313 to go over accent resources before other rehearsals begin. Since the accents are integrated into the lyrics and rhythm of the songs, it’s almost impossible to separate one from the other. We focused on the Estuary English dialect, which is a dialect that is primarily spoken around the River Thames and its estuaries. Like London itself, the accents around the Thames have merged together into many different unique dialects of British English.  This accent will be a “homebase” for the whole cast as our characters grow and settle into who they are.

Using accent and song in this way is so new to me, but also so exciting. This whole year, a goal of mine is to embrace myself and my journey where it is and I want to carry that into the rehearsal process. Another goal of mine this year is to do things for the pursuit of learning and growth. So, I want to approach Mrs. Phelps in the exact same way. I am eager to begin this work and hope to approach every rehearsal with a voracious need to learn and grow.

09/19 – Music Rehearsal with Mark

Today was the first music rehearsal I was able to attend! We worked on a few of the ensemble numbers and I’m super excited to be singing some of my favorite songs in the show off stage. They’re such fun numbers! Something I’m focusing on is making sure I learn the songs correctly (with the accent) the first time, since it will save time later on in the process.
